I’m not a footballer, but I do consider myself a fan- if not of the athleticism, perhaps of “the anthropology of the sport” - the way it brings a community together in pride and despair, to ride for your team or play with your friends.
I love how accessible it is, how it shapes culture, how culture shapes the sport in turn, I love all the history and the style and the way it brings people together. During their historic run in the 2022 World Cup, I bought a knockoff Morocco kit at Souk Al Ahad and beamed at my neighbors as they beamed at me for joining their team.
The universality of soccer on the beach.
FROM THE ARCHIVES
A few years later I was back in Taghazout - summer, so the beaches were full, and I loved (still love) watching all the goings-on from my window in Dar Margaret. One afternoon, I looked out and saw the entire stretch filled with ballers - juggling in a circle, practicing tricks, playing pickup on a pitch carved into the sand by dragging feet.
I designed this print to try to capture that moment - the way my eye bounced from ball to ball, the high contrast of the low afternoon sun. Each of the little barefoot guys was drawn straight from the video of that moment — they’re real people, they were all balling on the same beach at the same time — but really, it could have been Rio, or Rockaways, or Nazare, or Venice… the universality of football on the beach.
